For Frieze London 2021 Christian Andersen presents a series of oil paintings on linen by Damon Sfetsios. The paintings are realist scenes from small organic farms in upstate New York painted from 2015 to present day. The imagery is sourced from documentation of Scrimpy Summer Farm Tour I and II, a collaborative art event directed by the artist and peers during a brief period in the summer of 2014 and 2015.
The Farm Tours were conceived under the influence of post occupy politics and anthropocene discourse as an experiment in using art as a tool to investigate the boundaries of city and country. A day of labor from the touring New Yorkers would be exchanged for use of the farms as venues for the exhibition of art works and performances for the farmers.
The resultant documentation became the basis for Sfetsios’ ongoing series that examines and equates the exhaustive and meticulous labor associated to small organic farming and picturesque landscape painting, and questions that if the best ingredients come from small farmers, could it also be that the best paintings come from small brushes?
